Planning Your Spring Adventure: Get Ready to Ride!

January 25, 2025

As the chill of winter begins to fade, it’s time to start dreaming about the open road and the adventures that await in the warmth of a new season. Planning your spring rides now can set the stage for unforgettable journeys. Here are some tips to help you get ready to ride.

Set Your Riding Goals 🎯

What do you want to achieve this riding season? Whether it’s conquering a challenging route, joining a group ride, or simply enjoying more time on two wheels, setting clear goals can keep you motivated and focused. Write them down, and break them into actionable steps — for example, picking dates for specific rides or registering for group events. Tracking your progress along the way can help you stay on course so you can track your progress throughout the season. If you’re feeling rusty, research and practice specific motorcycling skills, or sign up for a course near you.

Map Out Your Routes 🗺️

Spring is the perfect time to explore new territories or revisit your favorite routes. Start by researching scenic roads and destinations that offer the elements you’re looking for based on the goals you set. Use tools like motorcycle route apps to plan your rides. As the season draws closer, consider factors like road conditions, traffic, and weather patterns to ensure a smooth ride. Need inspiration? Contact local riding groups or online communities for recommendations — they’re a great resource for discovering must-ride roads.

Gear Check: Safety First! 🛡️

Before hitting the road, make sure your gear is in top shape. Inspect your helmet for any signs of damage, and be conscious of its production date (helmets need replacing about every five years). Check gloves, jackets, and boots for any signs of wear and tear. If you’re missing anything essential, or if your current gear is worse for wear, now’s the time to invest in quality gear for the upcoming season.

Tune-Up Your Bike 🛠️

Give your motorcycle some love before the spring rush. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends performing a T-CLOCS inspection after taking your bike out of storage:

  • T – Tires and Wheels: Check for proper tire pressure, tread depth, and visible damage like cracks or flat spots. Inspect spokes, rims, and wheel bearings for wear or looseness.
  • C – Controls: Test levers, pedals, cables, and hoses for proper function. Look for fraying, kinks, or leaks that might compromise performance.
  • L – Lights and Electronics: Verify that all lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, and indicators) are working. Check your battery charge and ensure the wiring is secure and free of damage.
  • O – Oil and Fluids: Check levels for oil, coolant, brake fluid, and fuel. Look for leaks or contamination, and top off or change fluids as needed.
  • C – Chassis: Inspect the frame, suspension, and chain or belt. Ensure everything is aligned properly, and check for signs of wear, corrosion, or looseness. Clean and lubricate the chain if necessary.
  • S – Stands: Make sure the side and center stands operate smoothly and can support the bike securely.

If you spot anything unusual or lack confidence in addressing certain issues, schedule a professional maintenance check at your local shop. Regular inspections help ensure your bike is in good condition and ready for the road ahead.
