May marks the start of peak motorcycle riding season and it’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month — a time to remind everyone on the road to stay vigilant and prioritize safety. With more riders on the streets, now is the perfect opportunity to highlight how we can all do our part to ensure safer roads for everyone.
Why Motorcycle Safety Matters
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) paints a concerning picture: traffic fatalities are on the rise, with factors like distraction, speeding, and alcohol contributing to the increase. Motorcyclists already face greater risks due to their smaller profile on the road.
“Distraction, speeding, and driving under the influence are all things we can change,” says Rob Gladden, Vice President of Training Operations at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). “Smart, attentive driving and riding behaviors can save lives.”
Top Safety Tips for Drivers
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is a call to action for all drivers to actively look out for motorcyclists. Here are five essential tips to keep in mind:
- Look Twice, Save a Life: Motorcycles can easily be hidden in blind spots or obscured by other vehicles. Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or turning.
- Stay Focused: Put down your phone and avoid distractions like eating or engaging with passengers.
- Use Your Turn Signals: Signaling your intentions can prevent collisions and help motorcyclists anticipate your moves.
- Give Riders Space: Maintain a safe following distance and avoid crowding motorcyclists in their lane.
- Secure Your Cargo: Loose items or debris can create hazards for two-wheelers. Keep everything in your vehicle or properly secured.
Tips for Riders
Riders also play a critical role in road safety. Here’s how to gear up for a safe ride:
- Be Visible: Wear bright clothing, use a light-colored helmet, and keep your headlight on at all times.
- Ride Defensively: Assume drivers can’t see you and stay hyperaware of your surroundings.
- Gear Up Every Ride: Invest in proper riding gear, including a full-face helmet, abrasion-resistant clothing, gloves, and boots with good ankle protection
- Follow the Rules: Respect traffic laws and avoid making sudden, unpredictable maneuvers.
- Check Your Bike: Perform a pre-ride inspection using the T-CLOCS checklist to ensure your motorcycle is road-ready.
The Bigger Picture
With more people turning to two-wheelers for commuting, errands, and recreation, there comes a shared responsibility for all road users to foster a safer environment.
Programs like the MSF’s Basic RiderCourse help new riders learn the skills and mindset needed to ride safely, while refresher and advanced courses help experienced riders sharpen their abilities. For motorists, the message is simple: #SeeMotorcycles.
Let’s Make Safety a Priority
This May, let’s commit to safer roads. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, small changes in behavior can make a big difference. By staying alert, respecting one another, and following safety guidelines, we can all help reduce traffic fatalities and make the roads a safer place for everyone.
